Why this artist is making ink from guns

Nearly 43,000 people died from gun injuries across the US in 2023, according to the database Gun Violence Archive. Red, for example, requires roasting the iron sulfate; yellow, the more finnicky hue, is the result of mixing the iron sulfate with an alkali like baking soda. Because of the time and labor involved to make the pigments, Little only produces them in “special batches” for artists who seek them out. It’s like gun violence in that this small thing can do so much, and it’s so potent.”Little's large batch of ink for the artist Christina Kwan, who has been experimenting with his materials. Remington is consolidating its operations in Georgia, a state the company says is friendlier to the firearms industry. Mayor John Stephens meets with village board members under a seal portraying Eliphalet Remington holding a long gun. The four-story, brick plant by Armory Street and Remington Avenue looms over the community about 55 miles (90 kilometers) east of Syracuse. The Ilion plant went to a group of investors called the Roundhill Group as part of a $13 million bid. After months of union negotiations, the firearms plant reopened in the spring of 2021.

By Sarah Morland(Reuters) - The head of the United Nation's drugs and crime office on Thursday warned of a "vicious cycle" of arms trafficking to increasingly powerful Haitian gangs, fueling an internal conflict and worsening violence across the Caribbean. "It's more important than ever to take every measure possible to prevent illicit flows," the UNODC's executive director, Ghada Waly, told a U.N. Security Council meeting, saying arms trafficking and gang activity were feeding off each other. A recent UNODC report found that most illegal firearms seized in Haiti came from the United States, notably Florida, Arizona, Georgia, Texas and California. After the Dominican Republic shut its border with Haiti, smugglers were turning to more remote routes including clandestine airstrips, the report said. No date has been set for deployment, which Haiti requested in October 2022.

A federal appeals panel in Boston ruled on Monday that a $10 billion lawsuit filed by Mexico against U.S. gun manufacturers whose weapons are used by drug cartels can proceed, reversing a lower court that had dismissed the case. The decision, which is likely to be appealed, is one of the most significant setbacks for gunmakers since passage of a federal law nearly two decades ago that has provided immunity from lawsuits brought by the families of people killed and injured by their weapons. Mexico, in an attempt to challenge the reach of that law, sued six manufacturers in 2021, including Smith & Wesson, Glock and Ruger. It contended that the companies should be held liable for the trafficking of a half-million guns across the border a year, some of which were used in murders. In September 2022, a Federal District Court judge threw out the suit, ruling that the law prohibits legal action brought by foreign governments.

Photo: Bing Guan/Bloomberg NewsA group of activist nuns filed an unusual shareholder lawsuit to pressure gun maker Smith & Wesson to drastically change the way it markets, makes and sells its popular version of the AR-15 rifle. The so-called shareholder derivative action, which the nuns filed in Nevada state court Tuesday against publicly traded Smith & Wesson, alleges that company leaders are putting shareholders at risk. They argue the leaders are exposing the company to liability by the way they have made and sold the rifle, which has been used in several mass shootings in recent years.

Attendees inspect Smith and Wesson firearms at the National Rifle Association's (NRA) annual meeting, in Indianapolis, Indiana, U.S., April 28, 2019. Smith & Wesson, which is incorporated in Nevada, did not respond immediately to a request for comment. The group of nuns filed the lawsuit in their role as Smith & Wesson shareholders, in what is known as a derivative lawsuit. The nuns alleged that the directors of Smith & Wesson have ignored growing legal risks from making assault-style rifles. Smith & Wesson warned in its 2022 annual report that it might have to pay significant damages due to legal proceedings against the company.

Colorful Ring Nebula shines in new Webb images

CNN —The James Webb Space Telescope has revealed colorful new portraits of the iconic Ring Nebula. Webb previously captured a different perspective on the Ring Nebula, as well as the similar-looking Southern Ring Nebula. A longtime favorite of astronomers, the Ring Nebula has been studied for years due to its observability and the insight it can provide into the lifetime of stars. Messier and astronomer Darquier de Pellepoix discovered the Ring Nebula in 1779. As the dying star was throwing off its atmosphere, the companion star shaped the outflow and sculpted it.”

These four trends are shaping the gun industry

Here are four trends that are shaping the gun industry today:Market normalizationSeveral companies in the gun market are slowing down production and slashing prices as they combat material cost increases and waning demand for their weapons. Gun sales typically see a spike during presidential elections, Dionisio added. Investors in Biofire include venture capitalist Ron Conway and Peter Thiel's Founders Fund Biofire's smart gun comes as gun manufacturers increasingly look for different materials and technologies to make their products more appealing to consumers. "Smart guns can ensure that guns are accessible by their owners and no one else," said Nick Suplina, senior vice president for law and policy at Everytown, who has tested Biofire's smart gun. First-time gun purchasers during the pandemic, according to the study, were younger than previous, pre-pandemic U.S. gun owners.

Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston questioned whether a lower-court judge wrongly concluded that a U.S. law barred Mexico from suing Smith & Wesson Brands (SWBI.O), Sturm, Ruger & Co (RGR.N) and others. "What we want is an injunction to make these defendants start paying attention to their distribution systems," he said. "You have licensed manufacturers that sell to licensed distributors that sell to licensed retailers that sell to individuals who satisfy the requirements of federal law, but some of them happen to be straw purchasers," he said.

Mexico launches appeal in suit against U.S. gun makers

MEXICO CITY, March 15 (Reuters) - Mexico has filed an appeal in a civil lawsuit against U.S.-based gun manufacturers, it said on Wednesday, looking to crack down on the trafficking of weapons to powerful drug cartels. A U.S. judge in September dismissed the $10 billion lawsuit seeking to hold U.S. gun makers responsible for facilitating the trafficking of deadly weapons across the border. The issue of gun violence in Mexico has drawn new scrutiny on both sides of the border in recent days following the cartel-linked kidnapping of four Americans in the northern state of Tamaulipas, during which two of them and a Mexican bystander were killed. Mexico is not the only country in the region to be plagued by gun violence. Reporting by Sarah Morland; Editing by Robert BirselOur Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.

"Probable cause exists that [Carpenter] made threats to cause injury and death to Jewish members of the Michigan government," an FBI agent wrote in a complaint against Carpenter. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said Thursday that the FBI told her that she was among the group of Jewish state elected officials targeted for murder by a "heavily armed defendant" who has been arrested.
